Handmade African Ceramic Art Beads 2004

African Beads

I fell in love with these beads for their simple, earthy beauty...and also for what this project represents...I was fascinated by the bead making process and how functional they are...their flattened shape and smooth texture make you want to touch them.
The Project:
The mission is to provide and sustain employment for African women in Kenya, who, in some cases are the sole providers for their children and families.
Increased sales of these beads enable more women to work. Although the women have had little formal schooling, they are highly skilled at making these beads. The women receive fair wages for their work, have excellent working conditions and many of them have been with the project for more than 20 years. The "loose" beads are sold in America by a former Peace Corps volunteer.

Wine Tasting & Vintage Beads for The Make a Wish Foundation of Rhode Island 2005

Monday, March 21, 2005

The weather cooperated and last Friday was a wonderful night at the 2nd annual "Art by the Glass" wine tasting and silent auction event benefiting the Make a Wish Foundation of Rhode Island. It was an honor to meet local artist Maxwell Mays and to be surrounded by such beautiful artwork. The musical entertainment, provided by their 9th "wish child" Colin, really set the mood.
The best part of the evening for me had to be the people. My husband, Steve, and I really enjoyed talking to everyone and meeting some of the wish families...including Colin's parents. It reminded me to never assume I know anyone's "story" and that it's worth taking the time to listen.
I also, want to thank everyone at the make a Wish Foundation of Rhode Island for including me in their mission. I was glad to be able to use my jewelry to help in some small way, by donation a percentage of my sales for the night.
I hope this was just the first of many opportunities to be involved...

My First "Nepenthe Cafe" Jewelry Trunk Show Benefiting the Make a Wish Foundation of Rhode Island 2005

The Thursday, April 21st, East Greenwich, Rhode Island Stroll was the backdrop for my first trunk show at Nepenthe Cafe.
The cafe is such a warm and inviting space with a healthy, creative menu. I look forward to our next show, Friday, May 6, 2005, from noon till 4:30...just in time for Mother's Day!
